Hi. I am Jason and I am a Canadian born chinese from Vancouver, BC. I grew up in Vancouver and I cannot see myself living anywhere else.
I first got into photography on my own in 1995. I started out with my father’s Canon F1 using FD L-series lenses on mostly black & white 35mm film. I was lucky enough to have an accessible dark room to develop my own film and create prints for many years.
When digital started taking over, I didn’t make the jump right away. Quality was not the same as film and it was not that convenient at the time. Data storage was still very expensive too. It was April 2008 when I got my first DSLR (Canon EOS 40D). It was like learning photography all over again. The physical darkroom became a computer screen with photo editing tools like Aperture and Photoshop.
My primary choice of computer are Apple computers. My first experience with Macs was with the LC520 before getting PowerMac, iMac and PowerBook. Now, MacBook Pro all the way editing photos and videos on-the-go.
I am now shooting photos and videos primarily with my Canon EOS 6D. My favourite lenses are the Canon EF 16-35mm f2.8L and Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS. Some of you are wondering why I didn’t go for the 5Dm3 or better. I love the sharing capabilities with built-in wireless connectivity. I am able to display, share and print photos wirelessly.
Lighting is important to me. I self taught myself to understand about lighting as much as I can. Natural/ambient lighting is very challenging at times with different colour temperatures. Even when I use speedlites for indoor events, I still manually select the colour temperature. I also have custom colour gels for my lights to balance the colours in a room to reduce the mixed lighting conditions. In 2015, I invested in portable strobes (Profoto B2) to further extend my reach and creative abilities.
At the end of the day, it’s not the gear that I have. It’s the ability to think on your toes to adapt to the environment and capture that moment the way I want it. I still have lots to learn and respect those who have master the craft.
I love photography and recently videography because I am to share the moment and tell a story. I get to do this with some amazing people with many talents. Over the years, I have met so many great people and can say that I have made some friends for life. There are so many genres of photography. It’s something I can do forever and whenever. It’s so relaxing when I make early morning timelapse videos. I love finding a quiet spot and focusing on my vision.
What’s next for me is finding a way to make a full time career. I would love to have my own studio that I can work with many talents out there. Until then, I enjoy shooting at various locations. I look forward to the opportunities ahead of me. Thanks for your support.
